I'm Jill, and Flowers from Rome is my cut flower operation I run on Stoney End Farm in Rome, Maine. By day, I'm a chemical engineer in the paper industry. By the time I get home, I'm in my same work clothes crossing the road to tend to my flower field.
My engineering brain doesn't switch off when I start growing. I treat each season like an experiment: I take notes, adjust soil and fertilization, try new varieties, and pay attention to what the property is actually telling me. It's structured, but it isn't precise. For example, I'm not measuring every stem within a centimeter. I approach each season with curiosity, and I'm learning every year.
After every dance recital in my childhood, my family would congratulate me with a bouquet of homegrown flowers—and I've loved cut flowers ever since. As soon as we moved into our house, it felt like destiny from the start. We’re nestled right across from Stoney End Farm and I’ve had the gift to build a beautiful (& budding) relationship with the farm, which brought Flowers from Rome to life. Prior to starting the business, I spent six years learning with a local town Flower Club before I ever had the space to grow at this scale.
Since 2024, I’ve supplied local florists, neighborhood restaurants, and friends & family with homegrown cut stems to bring people together and create memorable experiences. Our small but growing team includes my husband Dan, our daughter Ellie, and our sweet sweet flower pup (& model), Camber.
